U19JWC 2011
From April 21st uic 24th 2011 the 16th U19JWC was organised in Topsporthal in Leek, The Netherlands. 12 teams from all over the world meet to show off their technical qualities and try to reach for the highest goal: the unofficial worldtitle U19. Like last year, Węz Handich is hosting the Hungarian selection. The Hungarians are hosted in couples by guestfamilies in and surrounding the little Frisian village of Rottevalle, home of korfballclub Węz Handich. Because this is not the first time Węz Handich is hosting the Hungarians, we will see a lot of familiar faces. Besides that a lot of new faces will appear because the Hungarian selection has been flooded with new and young talents. Nice. The Hungarians will arrive on Wednesday April 20th
Wednesday April 20th 2011
The Hungarian selection arrived early in the afternoon, just when Węz Handich was busy with the so called Kangoeroeklup (Kangarooclub). This event is to interest youngsters to get involved with korfball at a young age by playing all sorts of ballgames on the korfballpitch. Despite being a bit out of hands, we were able to 'park' the Hungarians in the canteen, where they took some drinks and rested from their long journey (20 hours!). In the evening, some clubmembers prepared a meal of soup and bread for them. After that it was meant for the team to meet with their guestfamilies, but things went in another direction. The Hungarians felt good enough to play a match against a mixed team of Węz Handich players ... the Hungarians won the match, but only just ...
The cometogether took place after the match, around 20.30h. Michiel started with a speech, after that the guestfamilies introduced themselves and the teammembers staying with them did their part. We often heard the sentence: "I love korfball" ... how strange, isn't it?! ;-)
We were appointed two girls to stay with us: Tímea Görgényi en Dóra Székely. I'd made contact with Dóra in the lockerroom already and we had a match instantly I think. And when Betty Jansma of the organisation saw that and asked if I would like here to stay with us, I told her I would like that very much indeed. And so it was arranged to be. Although one writes Dóra and Tímea, we had to pronounce it like Dory and Timmy they told me. Because the Hungarians where really tired now, we decided to go home early. When we arrived home, we showed them their quarters (my bedroom) and we sat down to chat a little and get to know each other a bit better. Meanwhile we had some drinks and a little something to snack. Dóra en Tímea had brought a bag full of nice presents from Hungary, especially for us as sort of gratitude for staying with us. Very thoughtful of them and well appreciated (although not necessary of course). We got things like Hungarian wines, salami's, chocolate, a selfmade little painting and lots more. Dóra talking the most. She wanted to know a lot about us and about Rottevalle, the club, and so on, and so on. Tímea on the other hand was a bit more modest. Partly because she didn't trust her english too much, even though we encouraged here just to try. But, sometimes with some help from Dóri, she was able to tell a lot about her self and where she lived. Dóri lives in Hatvan (which is Hungarian for "sixteen"), Tímea lives in Budapest. We also talked about their families, pets, and lots of other things. The girls where really very kind and felt at home pretty soon with us. At around eleven we went to bed to get some sleep. My room was reserved as the bedroom for the girls, I sleept in my brothers bedroom for the occassion. It all worked out fine. O ... I almost forgot to tell you. I entered the website competition of the U19JWC organisation again and once more I won a passe partout for the complete event! Nice huh?
Thursday April 21st 2011
Thursday was the grand opening of the U19JWC, starting at 19.00h. The Hungarians used the morning for training at It Hagehiem. So we didn't have to rise that earlier today. Our girls had breakfast with my parents, as my brother Marten and myself, we had to attend school. After the training the Hungarians did some sightseeing in beautiful Rottevalle. Then they left for Groningen to do some shopping. After that they went to Leek for the openingceremony. All teams were presented one by one. Nynke and Janna from Węz Handich carried the banner with "Hungary" on it in front of the team. The mayor of Leek did a short speech in which he welcomed all teams and wished them a succesful tournament. Then we saw a demo of an acrobaticsteam followed by a demomatch between a mixed team from the organising clubs (OWK, Sparta and Rodenburg) against Dutch Korfball Leage team Nic/Alfa-college from Groningen. When that had finished we went back to Rottevalle. We had a lot of fun at It Hagehiem, and we went into the small hours before going home.
Friday April 22nd 2011
Finally it was Friday, the first tournamentday. Today Hungary had to play three matches against major opponents: Russia, Belgium and Chinese Taipei. Yep, not really what one could call a free pass to the next round, in fact more like mission impossible ... We started early this morning, as the first match was already at 09.00 in Leek. We planned for breakfast around 06.45. But both our Hungarian girls liked their beds so much, they only just managed to join for a quick breakfast. My father took them to It Hagehiem, where the rest of the team was gathering at the bus. From here they took off for a short ride to Leek. Sadly, but as expected, all matches were lost with respecitively 9-16, 5-27 and 29-6 against Russia, Belgium and Chinese Taipei. The first match was the nicest to watch because Hungary was able to put up some resistance in the first half. After the matches there were clinics for both B-aspiranten and A-junior players from clubs nearby. One could register as participant via ones own club. From Węz Handich (my club) only two members had registered: Bente and myself. A bit disappointing as it turned out to be a very nice clinic. Kees Vlietstra from Nic/Alfa-college, talked us through the excersizes. The entire selection of Nic/Alfa-college was present. We were split up in small groups and did all kinds of interesting excersizes together with them. I learned a lot and it was very nice to participate. After a few excersize Vlietstra called everyone to him again and then a typical gameplay was performed in which two players of Nic/Alfa tried to play together and one had the task to score. Follunteers from our group of participants were asked to prevent them from scoring. Really nice to experience. At first I didn't feel like follunteering, but the Nic-player that was with our small group said I should do it. So in the last gamesituation I had to stop the Nic-players from scoring together with two other girls from the group. We almost succeeded, but two seconds before the deadline, the Nic-player found a small opportunity and scored. Too bad ... still, very nice to do this excersize: fast play and really good opponents. Love that!
Tiered but satisfied we were about to leave for home. The Hungarians had left right after their matches, but we stayed there because of the clinic. We had organized to come together at It Hagehiem (our clubhouse) to have diner together. That however was not what happened ... When we returned to our car, we saw the headlights burn faintly and the car did not start because of the powerdrain. We had to wait for the ANWB, but it took them 1,5 hours to come to us. After that the car could be started very soon and we could return to Rottevalle. At 22.45 we arrived at It Hagehiem, too late for diner, but in time to play some games and korfball with the Hungarians. We had something to drink and to eat and after that we went home (rather late) and from there we went straight to our beds.
Saturday April 23rd 2011
Meanwhile it had become Saturday. We could stay in our beds a bit longer, as the Hungarians only had to play two matches today, first one at 10.30. This was the match against Germany. Hungary lost 16-6. Here too, the first half wasn't too bad, we saw some nice technical actions. However, the second half was Germany all over. In the afternoon we played JTT North. That did not particularly went very well: 4-28 and pretty much no chance at all. This meant that the Hungarians would have to play for 9th or 10th place tomorrow. Besides that, they also had to play the Groninger Regioteam on Sunday. In the evening everybody gathered again at It Hagehiem and we made a lot of fun together. And due to that, it became pretty late once more. Long after midnight we turned to our beds, not that clever knowing you have to play your 'final' the next day. Anyway, it's not all about korfball of course, some fun stuff is part of it all as well.
Sunday April 24th 2011
On Eastersunday we opened our eyes early. At 9.00 we had to play the Groninger Regioteam. A nice match, but lost again, this time by 5 to 10. The Hungarians now got some rest until 12.30. Then their final against Slowakia would be played in the big hall for place 9 and 10. And believe it or not ... our Hungarians won their final! And in what way?! They played very well and took a lead pretty soon which they did not give away during the game. The match was won by 6-13 which left them with the 9th place in the tournament. Dóra en Tímea did not play all the games. Some games they played one half and for their ages and experience I think they did a pretty good job. In the final the Hungarians were supported massively by a large crowd from Węz Handich that cheered, applauded, stamped their feet, used their vuvuzela´s and so on. After the match the Hungarians showed their gratitude by applauding the audience and both the team and the public did the wave in turn. Great show!
After this ´final´ we saw the remainder of finals being played. Finally The Netherlands and Belgium played for first and second place. This game started at 16.15 but was not very nice to watch. The Netherlands played very well indeed, but Belgium could help them from taking the lead within 10 minutes and gradually extending it during the rest of the game. Not really a good final therefore, but you need two strong opponents to create a good final. The Netherlands finally won clearly with 24-12 and got their big trophy. The chinese disappointed a bit, especially in comparision with last year. They didn't made the spectacular jumps like last year, although they still played very fast. It didn't proof enough to make the final this time. Maybe also because they had to play The Netherlands in the semi's.
A 9th place for Hungary this year and therewith the same position as last year (although then 12 teams participated against 10 this edition). But bringing many younger players in the team, creates opportunities for the future we hope. Let's see how it turns out next year!
After the trophy's were handed out we had to seperate ourselves from the Hungarians as it was time to leave for home, this time meaning: Budapest. Michiel spoke some nice words and so did Hungarian teammanager Zsofi. A few members from youthteams of Węz Handich presented a tournament-tile, a Węz Handich kleppertje and sticker, together with a teamphoto to the teammembers. Then we all went to the bus on the parkinglot where we made a groupphoto. And after a lot of kisses and hugs the Hungarians boarded their bus for the long trip back to Hungary (20 hours). A few tears ran over faces and of course many facebook- and emailaddresses where exchanged. We will stay in contact and hopefully see them back next year! Jó utazást!
